The 34 strong choir of St Oswald’s Church Malpas spent the May Bank holiday Monday in Hereford where the choir sang Evensong in the magnificent Cathedral. The music sung included responses by Martin Neary, Psalm 33 to chants by Roger Fisher a former Assistant Organist of Hereford Cathedral and Organist of Chester Cathedral until 1996, Canticles in Bb by Stanford and the anthem ‘Do not be afraid’ by Philip Stopford. The organ was played by James Andrews who is Director of Music at Abbey Gate College and the Choir was conducted by St. Oswald’s Director of Music Stewart Smith.
The Choir sings every Sunday at Malpas and has built a wide and varied repertoire under the direction of Stewart Smith over the past 10 years. The Choir has sung Evensong in Chester Cathedral several times in recent years but this was the first time the choir has performed outside the Diocese.
The Revd Canon Ian Davenport, Rector of St Oswald’s said he was very proud of his Church Choir and he thanked them for all the hard work they had put into this occasion. Canon Davenport read one of the lessons at the Evensong in Hereford Cathedral.
